Kindergarten Tips - The Importance Of Reading Activities
As a homeschooler, there are tasks you need to accomplish in your child at an early age and one of the most important is getting them interested in and developing good reading habits. At an early age learning to recognize letters, the sounds they make and words they eventually form should be an activity and not a structured assignment. A great reading activity for kindergarten aged children, for example, is to read to them.
When you read your children a passage from the story, a natural progression in your reading activities with them is to have them paraphrase the story back to you. As they try to find new words that they can use with their description of the story, this will help them begin building their vocabulary and you will also be able to understand the level of listening ability and understanding that they are at.
Good reading activities don't always have to occur at the house, or just before bedtime. When you're on vacation or are running errands around town, you can have the kids start collecting words from signs or spell the objects they see. Learning different ways to describe the objects is another thing you can encourage them to do. Instead of "big", it may be "huge", or "enormous" - or even of "gargantuan" proportion! You can have your child arrange the words that they collected into silly phrases or sentences. A good kindergarten age reading activity could be something simple like collecting letters from signs and license plates because this will help them work their way through the alphabet.
What if you don't like doing this in the car or you don't travel much? What you can do is use every day items around the house and you can do the same thing. All around the house, there is bound to be plenty of labels. In order for your child to associate with the spelling and reading with a tangible item, you can actually put labels on everyday items around the house. After a while, you can help your child read and re-label the house when you have taken the labels off the items.
When your creative juices are flowing, you will be able to come up with a lot more reading activities. Making reading activities an every day part of their life is the key to all this. Considered to be an extremely passive thought processing activity is making an effort to spend an hour a day reading more and an hour less of television. While reading and using one's imagination is a source of growth and a great foundation from which to build.
