Explaining The Need To Inspect A Home School

by Yolanda Reyes

Homeschooling the children is an important issue that is the subject of many discussions. Parents argue that the standard in the public schools is not the same as it used to be; hence they would rather have their child schooled at home in order for them to have a direct supervision over the quality education. In the case of special children, homeschooling is not a matter of choice but of need. But part of home schooling is consenting to a home school inspection that ensures that you are working within proper guidelines.

The state also requires that the curriculum for homeschooled children is in accordance with the established programs required for and practiced in the conventional schools. Parents or qualified instructors who take on the responsibility of home schooling are held to these standards in an effort to provide the highest quality education possible for each student. Usually, the state education authorities will conduct a site inspection before giving the approval for the home school to commence operation. The home inspections are done on a regular basis in order to ensure that the standards set forth by the state are observed and maintained at all times during the duration of the home school period.

It is the duty and responsibility of the state educators to look over schools within their jurisdictions and home school inspection is within this purview. The home school inspection will pay particular attention to the study area where the child will be taking his home school education. Among the things the inspectors will look into is the location of the study area relative to the rest of the house, whether the child will be able to study in relative quiet and away from distractions.

The school inspectors will also look into the facilities and teaching materials that are being used or available for the use of the child including audio and video devices, computer and software, and reference books. The devices and materials should meet the minimum criteria required by the state school authorities.

Parents should realize that home inspection will redound to the benefit of the child. If you keep that in mind, it is less of an inconvenience and more of a necessary component of home schooling. School authorities are vested with the duty and obligation to conduct site inspection. The state and the parents share a common interest and obligation of providing quality education to the child so they can do nothing less than to integrate all their resources in attaining their common goal.
