Dolch Sight Words Make Reading Easy
If you have tried to teach another to read, professionally or otherwise, you know that this task can be daunting. Anyone learning to read, from adult learners to ESL students to young kids learning for the first time, run into trouble. Students learn to identify things by sight with Dolch sight words.
Edward William Dolch, PhD, first compiled this word list. It is a list of things commonly used in English. He created his list using children's books of the period; he published his list in 1948 in a booked called 'Problems in Reading.' 220 words make up his list. Most of these cannot be sounded out. Instead, they must simply be recognized.
Teachers working with their students along with parents working to teach their kids to read have used the list to instruct. Many different educational activities come from this list. Originally, his list was created to help children who speak English learn to read. Recently, however, the list has become more popular in the instruction of ESL students.
The main list is made up of 220 service words used to achieve reading fluency for children learning to read. To do so, students need to be able to recognize the main list. Dolch did not include nouns on his main list. He did later create a different list of 95 needed nouns.
